BMW 6 Series have been one of the BMW’s icons of luxury, class, and performance. The M6 model has been the top performing model in the 6-series lineup ever since the beginning.
Early Generations
The early generations of BMW 6-series was marked by the launch of E24 in 1976, which served as a replacement to the 3.0CSi (E9), and the 3.0CS. It had 3210 cc engine that delivered 197 PS (145 kW), and featured a safer chassis. Most of the 6-series cars have been based on the contemporary styled 5-series models. L6, a luxury version, arrived in 1987 featuring new accoutrements such as leather headliner and trims, and more modern amenities. But, after production of E24 ended, the 6-series vehicles were almost missing from the market for about 15 years.
The Come-back in 2003
Finally, the next generation 6-series cars made a stylish comeback in 2003, as the E63/E64 models hit the automotive markets in coupe as well as convertible forms.
They were followed by the modern 645ci, 650i, and 630i models. The 645Ci had a 4.4 L V8 engine, which could churn out about 333 PS (245 kW), while a more affordable inline 6-cyl engine was made available on the 630i, during 2004, followed by the E64 convertible featuring a removable top for the first time.
BMW M6 & Other Modern Contenders
The high performance M6 finally arrived in the latter half of 2005, while the 650i replaced 645ci during 2006. The M6 had V10 engine to deliver 507PS.
The 635d featuring a Twin Turbo 3.0L Diesel hit the markets in 2007, which was capable of delivering 430 ft•lb torque, and 286 PS (210 kW)
It was soon followed by the 635d Convertible, which also tagged as “the best 6-series of the lot.” We’re currently expecting the launch of 2011 BMW 6 Series Cabriolets some time soon, but there’s no official word from BMW yet.
